Women’s Association of Hilton Head Island February Luncheon

The Women’s Association of Hilton Head Island will hold their February Luncheon on Wednesday, February 4. The keynote speaker will be Mary Alice Monroe. Known for her intimate portrayals of women’s lives, Mary Alice Monroe’s writing gained added purpose and depth with her books set in the Lowcountry of South Carolina. An active environmentalist, Monroe draws themes for her novels from nature and the parallels with human nature, thus drawing attention to various endangered species and the human connection to the natural world. Mary Alice is involved with several environmental groups and is on the board of the South Carolina Aquarium, the Leatherback Trust, and Charleston Volunteers for Literacy. Monroe is a resident of South Carolina. Cost is $30 members, $38 nonmembers. Open to the Public. Contact lljjot@aol.com for further information.

A Taste of Gullah Festival

Native Island heritage and culture got the star treatment at this celebration of all things Gullah. The event features lip-smacking Lowcountry specialties such as barbecue ribs, conch stew, shrimp and grits, rice and beans, and okra gumbo, and includes a full plate of storytelling, gospel music and crafts.
