Regardless of how far in advance you prepare and pack your belongings, moving is always stressful. Here are a few tips for streamlining the moving process.
The month before the big move:
Purge. Before you pack, purge, purge, purge. Ridding your home of unused and unwanted possessions makes for a much easier move; the less you have, the less you have to pack. Use your move as an excuse for a garage sale, make a few trips to the dump, and donate old clothes or toys.
Organize your packing list. If you dump a bunch of random stuff in a box, unpacking is going to be a very frustrating process. Try to organize regions of your house by number or color, and then label the boxes accordingly.
The day before the big move:
Pack a moving-day kit. Your move can get messy if you don’t take care of the essentials. Pack a moving-day kit to ease the transition from your old house into your new home. Pack a box or bag with toiletries, changes of clothes, coffee, snacks, pillows — any must-haves for the first night in your new house.
Enlist some helping hands. Nothing makes moving easier and more fun than a little extra help. Ask friends, family, coworkers, and neighbors to help you move on the big day. Entice them with free food and a few celebratory beers at the end.
Moving Day:
Get plenty of rest. Though you may be excited, try to get a good night’s sleep. Nothing derails moving day faster than no sleep. Try to get a solid eight hours of rest and eat a big, hearty breakfast before you start moving.
