When it comes to searching for your next home, it’s wise to shop around and see as many homes as you can to ensure you’re making the right decision. Putting an offer down on the first house you look at is a little like proposing to the first person you ever go on a date with — very risky, and it very rarely works out. The average homebuyer sees at least ten homes for sale before making a decision. While you don’t necessarily need to look at every home on the market, you should compare at least three homes before making a decision. Even if you fall in love with the first house you see, check out a few others to make sure it’s “the one.”
Here are are few reasons why it’s wise to shop around:
Even if you absolutely love the kitchen, or the master bathroom, or the closet space in the first home you see, you might find similar – or better – features in another home. With only one showing, you have nothing to compare the home’s pros and cons. Who knows – there may be another home with the same upgrades for a lower asking price.
Shopping around can help you get a sense of the neighborhoods and communities, and help you learn more about each home’s resale value. If you purchase the nicest house on the street, your home probably won’t appreciate at the same rate of the surrounding homes, and you might have trouble selling your home in the future.
Rushing to the closing table – like rushing to the altar – may cause you to miss serious red flags and underlying issues. Finding surprises isn’t usually a good thing when it comes to buying a home, so make sure you inspect every room in the house. It’s also wise to have a home inspector examine the entire home very carefully before making a decision.
Surveying your options will help you avoid buyer’s remorse, and you won’t start to wonder if the grass is greener somewhere else. If you decide to buy without looking at several homes in the market, you could end up feeling like you’ve made a mistake. If you still love the first house you saw after visiting a few more listings, you can be confident in your decision to make an offer.
