Good Neighbors, Great Friends!

If you’re moving into a new neighborhood or considering moving into a home in one of Hilton Head’s many wonderful communities, you may be wondering what your neighbors might be like, and how you can make friends. A good neighbor may be someone who will look after your home when you’re away, collecting the mail, watering your plants, and keeping an eye out for suspicious activity. Currently, you might only be able to name one or two neighbors you trust to take care of your property, for whom you’d also reciprocate the favor. Wouldn’t it be nice if you had more neighbors you could rely on? 

The solution may just start with being a better neighbor first.  Here are a few tips for improving your neighborhood and making new friends at the same time!

• After you’ve moved into your new home, introduce yourself and your family to your new neighbors and exchange phone numbers and email addresses.  Agree with each other that you’ll let them know if you see something strange going on at their home. Discuss emergency plans and escape routes, and how to report suspicious activity. 
• Be aware of speed limits in your neighborhood, and slow down to keep pedestrians and children safe; everyone will appreciate it!
• Keep all pets contained and under control, either in a secure fence or on a leash. Always pick up after your dog and never leave your animals unattended, especially around children. Introduce your pets to your neighbors in a safe, controlled environment.
• Do not park in front of your neighbor’s home or driveway. Do not block any exits, intersections, or streets.
• If you plan on making any changes to your property or decide to remodel, notify your immediate neighbors about the construction and ask them to let you know if any of the contractors cause damage to their property.
• Let your neighbors know when you’re having a party or of any other instance when there will be more cars on the street than usual – maybe invite them to join!
• Maintain your property so that it adds to the beauty of the neighborhood. Follow all HOA standards and community guidelines and keep your yard free of debris.
• Put your garbage and recycling bins out for collection on the appropriate days and bring the bins back in as soon as they are emptied.
• Ask your neighbors about any social clubs or special events that are happening in your neighborhood. This can help you find common interests with others on your street.

Remember the Golden Rule when meeting new neighbors and making friends: treat others as you wish to be treated. Be courteous; don’t be noisy; offer a helping hand; and respect each other’s boundaries.  Having a sense of community and knowing that you all share the neighborhood can help develop long-lasting friendships and a better quality of life.
