A Safe Hilton Head Holloween

There is a chill in the air, night comes sooner, and there is an explosion of everything pumpkin. Halloween is NEAR!! Soon we will be visited by little ghouls, movie characters, and more. Here’s a couple of Tips on how to have a safe Hilton Head Halloween:

1. No child under the age of 12 should go trick or treating without the supervision of an adult.
2. All children, whether they are in a group, should be supervised.
3. When choosing a costume, pick a fire resistant material and bright colors.
4. Put an emergency identification and information on costumes or around their wrist. Include your child’s name, your name, your number, and your address just in case your child were to get separated from you.
5. Add reflective tape to costumes and treat bags.  Make sure treat bags are brightly visible. You want your child to be visible in the dark.
6. Make sure that costumes do not have tripping hazards.
7. Younger children are safer if they do not wear masks. If your child chooses to wear one, please make sure they can see and breathe.
8. Tell your children to not eat any treats until they have been inspected.
9. Toss any candy that has been unwrapped or unsealed.
10. If you had candy that you believe has been tampered with, contact 911 immediately. Even if you don’t know where the candy came from!
11. Flash lights and Glow Sticks are a MUCH better alternative to candles.
12. When turning your property into a haunted forest, make sure that you do not have any obstructions along the path. You don’t want anyone to trip.
13. Let’s leave the high voltage to Dr. Frankenstein.  Be careful not to over load your outlets and take all precautions to avoid starting a fire.
14. Use sidewalks when possible to avoid being hit by a car.
15. Beware of Goblins that throw eggs. The sooner you wash the egg from the car, the better. BUT IF YOU ARE DRIVING, do not use your wipers!! The water and the egg will smear all over your windshield and visibility will become near impossible.
16. Always test makeup before you apply it all over.
17. Avoid Dark Houses.
18. Look BOTH ways before crossing the street. Drivers may not see you and Halloween has one of the highest numbers in pedestrian deaths.
19. Choose costume props wisely. Make sure all swords, guns or any weapons are plastic or rubber.
20. Know your route. Go Trick or Treating in a neighborhood you are familiar with.
21. Set a curfew. Everyone needs to be home safe by ___ o’clock.

• At Shelter Cove Community Park, the Island Rec. Center hosts its annual Pumpkin Patch on October 28, complete with a petting zoo, blow-up rides, hayrack rides, costume contest and more. (843) 681-7273 orislandreccenter.org.
• Trick or Treat TangerStyle on October 29 in the courtyard of Tanger Outlet 2 from 1-3 p.m. An afternoon of “frightful fun,” children 12 and under in costume are welcome to come out for this Halloween/Harvest Festival. (843) 837-4339 or tangeroutlet.com.
• Halloween on River Street, Savannah, GA. Leave the kids at home and enjoy one of the largest Halloween Celebrations in the Lowcountry.
