Experience: For this month’s review of a local attraction, I thought I’d check out one of the many available private fishing charters and try my hand at catching a good meal while having a fun experience.  I chose to go with a friend and we booked a trip with Bulldog Fishing Charters based out of  Hudson’s Seafood on The Docks located on the North End of Hilton Head.  Bulldog Fishing Charters offer trips lasting for 2  to 8 hours. We chose the 6 hour trip. Upon arrival, we were greeted by Captain Christiaan and his First Mate and boarded the 32 foot Bulldog, a spacious boat with a restroom.  After the mandatory safety talk, we got underway and headed out into Skull Creek, passing Hilton Head Plantation to Port Royal Sound then cruising for approximately 45 minutes to reach our deepwater fishing spot, a man-made reef.  Fortunately, we both had previous deep-sea fishing experience so the crew did not have to instruct us as to using the rods.   However, beginners will get full instruction and guidance.

It was not long before we got our first ‘strike’ and landed a couple of small Blacktip Sharks.  Shortly after I got to reel in a good-sized Red Fish who put up a good fight and gave me a good workout.  Unfortunately, he was larger than the allowable maximum size so we had to let him go.   My friend Greg also got a large Red Fish.  After fishing for a couple of hours we headed back to shallow waters to try for fish such as Black Drum, Sea Bass, Snappers, Spanish Mackeral and Flounder. What can be caught varies with the time of the year.  What was evident was that our Captain knew exactly where the best fishing was.  Our final catch was – 4 Whitings, Blacktip Shark, and 6 Black Drum.  The crew cleaned them all and also let us know that Hudson Seafood Restuarant would be happy to prepare a meal from our catch!

Final Thoughts: Bulldog Fishing Charters provided a great fishing experience with an experienced and knowledgeable crew.  They offer trips ranging from a 2-hour introductory trip that is perfect for the kids and beginners all the way up to an 8-hour deep sea trip for the serious fisherman.  The rates are for a team of up to six and include everything that is needed including licenses, bait, tackle, and fuel. The only thing that you’ll need to bring is refreshments and a sense of adventure.  A gratuity is expected.

The crew was very informative and friendly. They will tell what is on the hook even before the fish surfaces. They will also tell what can be caught in what season and identify rare catches such as nurse sharks and toadfish.

Safety is top notch on board. There is, however, a risk of getting seasick when offshore or during the slight rougher seas so it is recommended to have motion sickness tablets on hand. Other than that, the crew ensures everyone has a safe and fun experience on the water. Our ride to and from each fishing spot was, for the most part, gentle.

There is no better way to get close to nature than on a fishing charter like this one. The atmosphere is the bountiful sea and the sky above.

As with all fishing, one will never know what will be pulled into the boat, and that is part of the fun. The action begins when the line is placed into the briny blue. When the rod tip bends, it’s fish on. It requires some strength for the larger fish, but it makes for an excellent, fun workout, nonetheless. Overall, this is a great trip to go on.
