A total solar eclipse occurs when the Moon’s orbit places it between the Sun and the Earth. When the Moon completely obscures the Sun, the Sun’s fiery atmosphere – the corona – can be seen. This years eclipse path will traverse the continental United States all the way from Lincoln Beach, Oregon to Charleston, South Carolina. Observers outside this path will still see a partial solar eclipse where the Moon covers part of the Sun’s disk. On Hilton Head Island, we’ll see about a 98% coverage of the Sun by the Moon – still very impressive and as long as you have a good view of the sky – anywhere on the beach is good – weather permitting, you’ll have a GREAT view! Peak Coverage on Hilton Head will be at 2:46pm (EST)
This celestial event blocks all or part of the sun for up to about three hours, from beginning to end, as viewed from a given location. For this eclipse, the longest period when the moon completely blocks the sun from any given location along the path will be about two minutes and 40 seconds. The last time the contiguous U.S. saw a total eclipse was in 1979.
Below is a schedule of times and places that the FULL solar eclipse can be seen. Visit: https://www.timeanddate.com/eclipse/in/@4581832 to see the time and coverage of the eclipse wherever you are in United States!
