Bluffton Builder Helps Flood Victims with Tiny Homes
Brighton Builders is breaking ground Thursday afternoon on a project to build a series of tiny homes that will be donated to families affected by the SC Flood.
“It’s time to start putting roofs over people’s heads,” company president Ben Kennedy said earlier this week. “We know there are going to be people who can’t salvage their house, and they are going to have to start over.”
The homes will be about 260 square feet and will include all essentials of a typical house, Kennedy said.
Recently, Tiny and Small Homes have been popping up all over America. The average size of new single family homes grew from 1,780 square feet in 1978 to 2,479 square feet in 2007, and to 2,662 square feet in 2013, despite a decrease in the size of the average family. The small house movement is a return to houses of less than 1,000 square feet . Frequently the distinction is made between small (between 400 square feet and 1,000 square feet ), and tiny houses (less than 400 square feet ), with some as small as 80 square feet.
Brighton Builders is starting with the construction of two homes.
The company is raising money to cover material costs. The amount of donations collected will determine the ultimate number of tiny homes built, Kennedy said.
A public groundbreaking ceremony for the first two homes is scheduled for 5 p.m. at 1321 May River Road in Bluffton.
