Care for a Lowcountry afternoon tailgating and watching a game of polo? This Sunday is the 22nd Polo for Charity Event at the Rose Hill Equestrian Center in Rose Hill Plantation in Bluffton.
Polo is horseback team sport believed to have originated in Southern or Central Asia, most likely in Persia. Its invention is dated variously from the 6th century BC to the 1st century AD.
The objective is to score goals against an opposing team. Players score by driving a small white plastic or wooden ball into the opposing team’s goal using a long-handled mallet. The traditional sport of polo is played at speed on a large grass field up to 300 yards long by 160 yards wide. Each polo team consists of four riders and their mounts. Field polo is played with a solid plastic ball which has replaced the wooden version of the ball in much of the sport. A polo game lasts roughly two hours and is divided into periods called chukkas.
This Sunday, please come eat and indulge in this historic sport. Rose Hill Plantation’s gates open at noon and the match starts at 2 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to get creative with their menu as well as their attire. The 22nd Polo for Charity Event is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Okatie with event proceeds benefiting local charities. All children under 12 are admitted free. For information contact Rotary Polo.
