Mitchelville Preservation Project – Hilton Head Island, SC
Saturday, June 20, 2015 from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM (EDT)
Hilton Head Island, SC
Reconstructing Mitchelville for one-day only at The June teenth Celebration is a family friendly event in Fish Haul Park, food and beverages will be available for purchase, but only limited seating is available so chairs are welcomed. In addition to live demonstrations, re-enactments and performances, artists will be in the park, depicting traditional Lowcountry life. Admission tickets for the event are $10, children 12 and under are free. Tickets are available online at mitchelvillepreservationproject.org and at the entry gate.
Like Mitchelville’s freedom story – Juneteenth is a similar story. Also referred to as “Emancipation Day” or “Freedom Day”, June teenth is a holiday in the United States that commemorates the announcement of the abolition of slavery in June 1865 throughout the Confederate South. The immediate differences in the two stories end there, as the June teenth story embodies the perseverance of people who struggled to gain independence compared to Mitchelville, a thriving community on Hilton Head Island that was the epicenter of freedom in the United States. This year’s June teenth Celebration replicates similar experiences taking place during that era of time that are significant to the freed slaves living in Mitchelville in 1862.
