Warmer weather and sunshine have Lowcountry homeowners dreaming of summer days spent lounging on the deck, sipping tea and firing up the grill. However, some have emerged from winter hibernation to discover the deck isn’t looking as inviting as it used to. Here are a few ways to revitalize your deck and get it ready for summer without emptying your wallet.
Inspect and repair. The first step for bringing your deck back to life is to check for any necessary repairs. Check the wood for rot, especially where the wood attaches to the ground (an area where moisture often invades) and where it connects to the house. Examine and adjust any fasteners, keep an eye out for damaged or rusted hardware, and replace these parts if needed.
Refinish it. To make your deck look like new, consider stripping the finish on your deck and giving it a fresh gloss. Ideally, you should be cleaning and resealing the deck once per year to protect against weather-related damage and keep your deck in good condition.
Replace the railings. Railings usually show wear and tear before any other area of the deck, and may need to be replaced. If you don’t want to deal with railing maintenance every year, consider replacing the wood rails with something like Fiberon, a vinyl-coated, wood-plastic composite.
Upgrade the lighting. Once your actual deck is looking like new again, consider upgrading your light fixtures to show it off. New, well-placed lights look more attractive and are usually safer. There are a variety of fixtures suited for stair risers, railings, and posts, all of which are great for night-time use.
