Warmer weather is right around the corner, and homeowners across the lowcountry are prepping their outdoor spaces for spring. There’s nothing better than spending the evening on the porch, watching the sun set over the marsh. Make your outdoor living area more cozy and inviting with these outdoor decorating ideas.
Use light colors and mirrors to make your outdoor space seem larger. Comfortable furniture covered with weather-resistant cushions can make your patio seem like an extension of your living room. Pale pastels and white wood add a fresh, beachy feel while small mirrors reflect light and the surrounding landscape for easy decoration. For a traditional southern look, paint your porch ceilings a pale “haint” blue.
If you are decorating a patio or well-covered porch, consider hanging artwork on interior walls. Whitewashed and unfinished walls offer a rustic backdrop for any art collection. Add sconces or small lights to showcase your decor.
A fresh coat of paint is always a great way to update the look of any outdoor area. Paint adds color and can protect your floors and walls from the elements. For bare wood floors, use a primer. Apply two coats of paint made for high-traffic areas, or choose a deck stain to showcase the wood’s natural beauty.
If you spend a lot of time on your porch entertaining or relaxing, create a softer ambiance with sheer curtains. They can also help with the mosquitos and noseeums. Heavier shades may also be helpful for those long sunsets and hot afternoons.
If you have enough room, consider adding a hammock or porch swing. Ensure your walls and ceilings are strong and sturdy enough to support the weight, first! Add pillows or cushions for a softer, cozier feel.
Create an outdoor dining room. Not just a picnic table and an old citronella candle. Decorate with outdoor lights, a seasonal centerpiece, and cushioned weather-proof chairs. Consider hanging a small chandelier over the table.
Decorating your outdoor space is a great idea if you’re looking to sell your home in Hilton Head. Homebuyers in search of beach homes or vacation homes will be very interested in an updated patio or porch – somewhere they can spend lots of time outside!
