Lifelong Learning of Hilton Head Island, Inc. is one of over three hundred such learning institutes through the country for working and retired adults, both residents and visitors. LLHHI offers peer-organized, peer-led and peer-taught courses on every imaginable topic from Civil War history to Southern gardening, medical ethics to space exploration and literature to architecture and art. A curriculum committee of some twenty members designs a balanced curriculum of courses, finds qualified instructors from both within and beyond the membership and publishes a catalog of the offerings. Different courses are presented each term, and there are no prerequisites for enrollment.
Classes are offered in two terms, a six week session in the fall and an eight week winter/spring semester. All classes are held during the day on weekdays except for special presentations or a lecture series. These are held on Saturdays to accommodate the travel arrangements of our invited lecturers. Generally, classes last two hours once a week for four or six weeks, but there are also some single session presentations. A typical term might offer twenty-two to thirty courses from which members select as many as are comfortable for their lifestyles and time available.
Curriculum planners find comfortable and appropriate space in retirement facilities with well-appointed and well-equipped meeting rooms, in conference rooms of banks and other island organizations and in the library. All of their venues are on Hilton Head Island.
