Did your list of New Year’s resolutions include some plans for your home? Maybe build a deck, reorganize the kitchen, or update the master bathroom. Every year, thousands of people vow to keep their homes more organized or finally tackle the remodeling project they’ve been talking about. Here are a few ways to keep your home resolutions this year.
1. Create a to-do calendar. Keeping up with home projects is easier when you have them scheduled and can plan ahead. Set realistic goals and allow yourself enough time to complete your projects. For example, if you plan on building a deck in March, schedule some appointments to meet with contractors in late January.
2. Make cleaning a habit. Keeping your home clutter-free is all about creating good, tidy habits. Choose a day during the week where every family member cleans and organizes a different room of the house, or plan a few minutes to put things away after dinner. These small habits, when done routinely, can really re-shape your home throughout the year.
3. Don’t set unrealistic goals. You probably won’t completely revamp every room in your house this year. Evaluate your time and financial requirements so you don’t set yourself up for disappointment when your budget won’t allow for you to refinish your basement AND turn that walk-in closet into a master bath.
4. Build your housekeeping muscle. Keeping your home clean and organized takes time, commitment, and perseverance. Housekeeping habits must be built with practice and strengthened over time, like a muscle. If you want your home to sparkle all year long, start small, and work at it often. Clean up dishes right after dinner, vacuum one room of the house every day, wipe down countertops and sweep floors before you notice dirt building up. As you establish this muscle, each task will become easier and more routine.
