Thinking about remodeling your home? It’s a great idea and a more affordable alternative to picking up and moving or starting from scratch! In addition, most remodeling projects add value to your home, in case you ever do decide to move. However, you should be cautious when choosing to remodel; plan carefully and create a strict budget, and be sure to find a contractor that suits your needs. Here are a few questions you should ask a builder before hiring them to remodel your home.
How much experience do you have with this kind of project? Even if the contractor has years of experience, that doesn’t mean he has remodeled a kitchen before. Your specific project requires specific skills. Find a contractor who maybe even specializes in your type of remodeling project, whether it’s kitchens or bathrooms or outdoor add-ons. You don’t want to find out half-way through the project that this is the contractor’s first time building a sun room.
Who is your designer? If your contractor doesn’t have a designer or specific architect in mind, this means you may need to hire one of your own. Even the most experienced builders don’t necessarily have an eye for design. If your contractor doesn’t have an architect or designer to work with, ask around to find someone who can design exactly what you need, before the building starts.
Are you local? Buying and hiring local is always a good idea. There are many experienced contractors in Hilton Head Island and Bluffton, and a contractor who doesn’t have to travel far means they are likely to be on time and get things done faster. Also, if any issues or emergencies arise, it’s better to have a local contractor than someone who is based two hours away.
How does my budget look? Be honest and upfront about the flexibility of your budget with a potential contractor. While some may be uncomfortable talking about budgets, this can save a lot of stress and hassle for everyone involved.
How do you get your estimates? All contractors estimate differently. Some remodelers offer very detailed estimates, while others give ball-park quotes. Understand a contractor’s pricing process before signing anything!
